-The sound of the album is very acoustic and organic but so powerful, crafty and nicely elaborated. Were you looking for a specific sound?
Definitely, yes. As it was not a big budget record with no independent producer, we stuck to the 'keep it simple' school - keep the lead vocal rich and let all the beautiful playing and the instruments showcase their sounds.
-The interplay between acoustic and electric instruments is very dynamic and attractive. It reminds some of your Kelly Gang great songs like Holy Land and Shutters and Windows. Yes, well I guess I wrote those songs you mention, and I am mainly an acoustic guitar player, so maybe that's where the similarities come from. Stay tuned for future sounds though, I've had the ukulele and banjo out recently!
- Tell the Catalan people, for a Sydneysider, what´s The Sea? It's Sydney Heads pulsing on a hot summers days, it's Bondi Beach on a perfect Autumn morning, with warm water and good surf, it's Sydney harbour in the winter fog with the sounds of the fog horns from the tug boats that can be heard for miles in the early morning, warning the water traffic, it's a massive southerly that whips up huge seas that smash the coast - it's life.
- It´s been 5 years since the The Kelly Gang album, how old are the new songs? They look like they come after a long maturing process. Yea, I think so. There's some love songs in there too! Very proud of this record lyrically. There's love, joy and sorrow in there, and some spooky weirdness too. My favourite song on the album is Every Red Light. That was written even before the Kelly Gang album, but I saved it up for special treatment. I didn't think it was a Kelly Gang tune. Most of the new songs are post Kelly Gang.
- In your case what comes first, music or lyrics? The music - I'll get the basic melody and basic structure of the song but I spend the most time during the writing process getting the lyrics right for me. Sometimes this can take a long time....I tend to be fussy.
- How hard is for an independent musician to develop a career in Australia nowadays? No different to anywhere else, apart from the population thing. We are a pretty small place down here compared to Europe or the US.....if you're not playing for the love of it then life can get hard. The internet is the future, and basically the reason why I'm talking to you.
- Here in our office, Every Red Light, Lifeboat and That´s the Sea are considered really good songs, brilliant tunes. One word that people uses here to describe your music is “elegant”. Are they receiving attention in Australia? Thank you! The album has been released online for now. We are planning to properly release the album in our summer, and support the release with some shows and hopefully some tours, so I'll let you know how it goes ....it's been well received in Barcelona though!!
- Sunshine superstar and Land of the free are such a great songs. It is so good that you decided to release them. Was this a last minute decision? Actually yea, it was - we did some sessions before the "That's The Sea" sessions. I wasn't all that keen on them at the time. I revisited the tracks at the time of the online release of "That's The Sea" and changed my mind and got them mastered. When I heard the master I was really pleased with the sound of the songs, and thought, as an independent artist I would be mad not to put these out, so I got the EP together in a week, for obvious reasons called it "Lost Property - Out-takes & Demos" and released it. I had to release The Sunshine Superstar somewhere too, as it's a special song to me. I wrote the music for it with Martin and I love the guitars & the lyrics on that song.
- Tell us a little about the musicians that play in the album. Well you know Martin, a great artist and my all time favourite guitar player. Hamish Stuart is a world renowned drummer - in high demand in Australia and a great friend with a wicked sense of humour. A very versatile player who also played drums on my earlier album 'Dreams of Flying.'. Alexander Hewetson on bass is in the same league as Hamish, and they play together on a lot of different projects plus Scotty Aplin on piano and keyboards has worked with me for years. He played in the Kelly Gang as well. A brilliant musician who has become too busy for my liking!
- When did you start writing songs? Which artists were you listening to at that time and what are you listening to now? Oh I grew up on Bob Dylan, Pink Floyd, Neil Young and all those types. I was a big fan of Australian bands like the Church & the Oils when I was a teenager which was a fantastic time for the live music scene in Sydney. These days I listen to a lot of different stuff. At the moment I'm loving Wilco's new album, and M.Ward, Bon Iver, Fleet Foxes - stuff like that.
- What are you touring plans? When we do some shows this summer I intend to try and organise some festivals and hopefully some tours will come out of that. You never know, Barcelona may be calling.
- We know it is to soon because the album has just been released , but we hope no to wait so long for your next album! Ha ha we shall see, we shall see.
